COACHES CORNER: U16 WEEK 2
Knights had a great start to the season, scoring 68 and conceding 0.
This weekend, the Northants Knights U16s take centre stage as they host Tournament 2 at Wellingborough Old Grammarians. With momentum from a perfect start to the season, we caught up with Head Coach Liam Docherty to get his thoughts ahead of his first home outing in charge.
Coach, you’re coming off a strong start in Tournament 1 with a 2-0-0 record. How would you sum up your team’s performance?
“Tournament 1 was definitely a slow burner in each first half. We took a little time to find our rhythm, but once we settled in, we were cooking with gas. Defensively, I thought we were stellar—every player stepped up and did their job. It was a great team effort and a solid platform to build from.”
What’s been the focus heading into this second tournament?
“The biggest thing for us is starting fast. We’ve talked a lot about coming out the gates with intensity and playing physical football from the very first whistle. It’s not just about winning—we want to dominate in every aspect of the game, from start to finish. That’s the standard we’re setting.”
How has preparation looked in the lead-up to this weekend?
“Really positive. The players have been locked in, and we’ve had a few new faces step up who are starting to make a real impact. That hunger to improve, to score more, to go further than we did in the first tournament—it’s there across the board. That internal drive is exciting to see.”
This weekend marks your first home tournament in charge. How are you feeling ahead of it?
“Obviously, I want to win—every coach does. But it won’t be easy. We’ve got Birmingham and Nuneaton, who are right behind us in the standings and will be looking to knock us off the top. The message to the team has been clear: it’s on us to take control, bring the fight, and show why we’re top of the division.”
Any players fans should keep an eye on this weekend?
“Absolutely. Noah Young has made a big switch—he’s moved from running back to nose tackle and is really starting to find his feet in that role. Then there’s Danny Tabberer, who’s been showing his versatility at wide receiver and running back. Both guys have worked incredibly hard and are great examples of the hunger and commitment we have as a team.”
